Two of a Kind

Kim Makhlouf

Whether it’s confusing friends, turning heads at parties or accidentally ignoring classmates, these AUC twins show that two identical faces are twice the fun.

On a campus where routines repeat and faces become familiar fast, twins live in a constant state of mistaken identity. Lecture halls, hallways, cafés — AUC’s shared spaces become a stage for double takes, awkward waves and conversations that begin mid-sentence with the wrong person. For twins, being mixed up isn’t occasional; it’s part of daily life.

The confusion plays out in small, comic moments. “Her classmates think she’s rude because she doesn’t wave back,” Nadine laughs. “Little do they know she has a twin, and the person ignoring them is me.” Somewhere on campus, Nada is unknowingly collecting imaginary enemies, all courtesy of sharing the same exact face.

During their very first semester, the twins experienced their first taste of mix-ups. Because they don’t always move together, many of the people they met had no idea there were two of them. One day, Karim’s friend Ahmed spotted Fady on campus and launched straight into conversation. “He came up and started talking like I’d known him for a while,” Fady says. “And it clicked in my head instantly.” The moment was harmless and funny — a story the brothers still laugh about.

At AUC’s annual Halloween party, the twins decided to embrace the chaos with style. They arrived dressed up as Thing 1 and Thing 2 from Dr. Seuss. “People kept stopping us for photos and mixing up who was who,” they recall. A friend even snapped a picture, completely baffled by seeing two identical twins in the same frame. The night became a blur of double takes, delighted confusion and unforgettable twin antics.

In a place where everyone shares the same paths and rhythms, twins don’t just look alike; they also live parallel lives. And at AUC, that means being someone else, accidentally, all the time.
